Originally named Chequaquet, Centerville is aptly named because of its location in the heart of Barnstable. Centerville Harbor was once a hub of activity during the ship building era in the mid 1800’s. The last of the massive vessels was built during the Civil War and sunk by rebels. Carriage building, general trade stores as well as a harness and tin shop are some of the other early industries in Centerville, run by such prominent names as; Crosby, Phinney, Childs, Lincoln, Gardner, Hallet and Jones.
Today, Centerville is home to nearly ten thousand year round residents, who enjoy the wonderful beaches that curve around Centerville Harbor and Wequaquet Lake, the largest inland body of water on Cape Cod. Year round and summer residents alike visit Four Seas Ice Cream, a Centerville mainstay since 1934 and touted as the oldest ice cream shop in New England.
